The medical laboratory is one of the cornerstones of modern science. Health care services are being utilized more frequently than the past. Now a days there has been an increasing dependence of patient care and epidemiological research on laboratories. Therefore the demand for quality result from the medical laboratories has been echoed by all level of health care professionals. Unreliable laboratory result may have serious consequence for the health of an individual and as well as community.

Department of Clinical Pathology was establish in 1968 the then IPGMR. Since inception, the department was dealing with teaching, consultancy service and routine reporting of indoor and outdoor patients. After establishment of Bangabandhu sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) in 1998 the department started modernization in different sections with full functioning of services from 8 AM to 9 PM daily and all holidays from 10 AM to 5 PM.  Presently the laboratory is fully well equipped and performing the different investigations both for in-patients and out-patients department. This department has an excellent teaching, research, training and investigation facilities. We have 4 teachers, 5 Consultants, 4 Medical officers, 2 Residents and 2 Research Assistants, 1 Chief medical technologist, 7 Medical technologists and about 10 others supporting staffs.

The department started its master course since 2006 in addition to diploma course. Initially during IPGM&R the number of patient were 100 – 150 approximately. But now a day patient’s number rises up to 700 patients per day with full automation service including software reporting service. At the moment we have about 25 M. phil and DCP Postgraduate students and 15 students from the other department of basic science faculty for 3 months training course. All the clinical residency postgraduate students are regularly coming here for lecture class. Regular departmental lecture class, practical class, seminar, journal club and thesis protocol presentation are going on.  About 60 DCP and 20 M. Phil students successfully achieved their degree from the department. A total of about 30 research projects have been completed by our students and 10 project completed in collaboration with other department.

A clinical pathologist supervises the technical staff in performance of tests to determine the concentration of organic and inorganic substances and medications in body fluids. A strict system of quality control are essential to assure accurate laboratory determinations.
We have developed some very rare but usefull tests for the patients

  1. Phase contrast microscopy- urine
  2. Polarizing microscopy- synovial fluid
  3. Sputum for a) Auramin fluorescence’s test, b) Giemsa stain for pneumocystis carrini in AIDS patients.
  4. Fecal fat sudan black III test, OBT
  5. Urine for chyluria
  6. Dark field microscopy
  7. Blood for IT ratio
  • At the moment we have latest one 6 part cell counter for haematology analyzer and body fluid analysis including reticulocyte count in addition two more 5 part analyzers.
  • Recently we have added one fully automated urine (chemistry and microscopy part) analyzer
  • We have 10 head Carl Zeiss teaching microscope where daily minimum one hour morning and evening session with students are done.
  • We have one automated Access immunoassay, ELISA, ESR analyzer, Electrolytes machine, Coagulometer, Semi-automated biochemistry analyzer machine, distillation plant and other necessary instrument in the department.
